Strong Foundations. Safe Communities. Bright Future.
Strong Foundation: A thriving community, much like your house starts with a strong foundation. That means investing in infrastructure (streets, flood mitigation, curbing, sidewalks, pathways, growth). This also means investment in the services we as a city provide (snow removal, water and wastewater, paving and repair).
Any plan that we as a council endorse needs to support our residents today while preparing our community for the opportunities and challenges that we will face tomorrow.
Throughout my time on council I have been a fierce advocate for strong foundational growth. Growth that is sustainable, manageable, and most importantly predictable and I’ve never sought to slash funding to essential, critical infrastructure needs that support a healthy, thriving city.
Communities across Canada face rising costs, deferred maintenance of essential infrastructure, short-term fixes, and aging municipal assets in desperate need of repair, or more importantly replacement. I believe too that our residents deserve the utmost for their asset, and much like in our own homes, we want to know they are getting good value on that investment.
My commitment to you is over the coming term, should I be fortunate enough to continue my service, is that I will always advocate for quality of life improvements, road improvements, more paths and sidewalk enhancements, better services like flood mitigation and proper water management, and improved supports for critical holistic improvements to Brandon’s arts, culture, and heritage scene. I’ve always fought for it, and will continue to do so.
Safe Communities: Brandon, like communities across the country is facing a safety epidemic, predominantly caused by the proliferation of street drugs such as methamphetamine, fentanyl, heroine, and other opioids. Unfortunately, we are not immune to this.
My commitment to residents is to continue at every juncture to advocate for safer communities. In these past eight years I have had the good fortune to work with Brandon Police Service, and members of the community safety team as well as residents to make improvements to safety in our neighbourhood.
This remains my commitment moving forward. A safe community is a healthy community, and a healthy community is a thriving one.
Bright Future: As we as a community look to the close out this decade, and sprint into the next one, Brandon is on the forefront of opportunity. Growth has been a big part of that, and supports for that growth include some of the work we as a council have undertaken this term. We’ve also advocated for sustainable, predictable growth. Growth built on investments and building of reserves.
So how does this look?
Improved sidewalk, cycle, and active transportation infrastructure
Create a safer and cleaner community through increased bylaw enforcement measures and active community partnerships
Work with other levels of government and private sector to help tackle the growing substance abuse issues in our community
Advocate for a proactive back lane maintenance strategy and enhancements to our city dust control measures
Invest in bold projects that help attract business, jobs, and industry to our growing community
Assure that the future growth is sustainable, and builds upon services that are cost effective while allowing the city to grow
Improved drainage infrastructure investments, and assurances that work is completed in a timely manner
Further, I feel we have plenty of opportunity in our cultural and arts sector, and projects on the horizon that support better access to housing, safer streets, and improved municipal services (like the new water treatment plant) as we collectively seek to build on that bright future.
I’m an eternal optimist, and I’m incredibly optimistic for our future here in Brandon and you should be too! Let’s continue to work together to make Brandon the best it can be.
